September 5th, 2024, will be remembered as a tragic day when Rebecca Cheptegei, a renowned Ugandan long-distance runner and Olympic medalist, lost her life to domestic violence. Her partner’s brutal act of dousing her with petrol and setting her ablaze is a stark reminder of the escalating cases of violence against women (VAW) in our society.

Today, CEDOVIP, in partnership with the DVA Coalition members, comes together to pay tribute to Rebecca’s legacy by wearing black. We condemn the continued brutal killings and escalating cases of VAW, and we reiterate our commitment to advocating for the safety and protection of women.

As the DVA Coalition lead, we pledge to continue pushing for a world where women can live free from fear of violence and abuse. We will amplify our efforts to ensure that Rebecca’s death is not in vain, and that her legacy inspires a safer future for all women.
